was climbing a small hill in the Afar Triangle of northern Ethiopia when the colors around her suddenly changed. The dusty browns and grays of the desert gave way to oranges, yellows, and greens so vivid they seemed almost surreal. "It was almost like a hallucinogenic trip," Crespo says. These unnatural-looking colors are a result of the sulphur, potash, and other minerals that saturate this area of the Danakil Depression. As the three tectonic plates at the bottom of the depression slowly pull apart, hot springs bubble up into acidic pools—like this one.
